Charles H. Dickinson, Iberville parish surveyor, was the grandson of the ill-fated Charles Dickinson who was killed by Andrew Jackson in a duel on May 30, 1806.

Charles H. Dickinson created his survey map in 1883.  The survey map is large with a scale of 1 inch to the mile.  In fine detail, the map covers all of Iberville Parish, most of West Baton Rouge Parish, some of East Baton Rouge, Assumption, Ascension, Iberia, St. Martin and Pointe Coupe Parishes.  Dickinson's survey updated Andrew Powell's survey of 1859.  The civil war had taken its toll, much land had changed hands, and the old order had been swept away by reconstruction which made the Powell survey obsolete.

The Historic River Road Collection© is the exclusive source for the last remaining copies of the 1883 Dickinson survey.  In the late 1970s Clifford LeBlanc and Lawrence Melsheimer very much wanted to have their own copies of the Dickinson survey, but none were available.  The Kleinpeter ladies, the last direct relatives of Dickinson had no more maps to sell.  So these men had the large map copied, and then collaborated with V. J. Vicknair of Plaquemine, who then hand colored it.  The master was then taken to Dallas, Texas to be reproduced in its exact size.

While they last, colored copies of this map are available from the Historic River Road Collection©  Email for details.

This is a 1.4 megabyte JPEG file, so it may take a while to open.

The Historic River Road Collection© has a 218  megabyte TIFF file of this map in extremely fine detail.  Also available is a 3.8 megabyte file that has a bit more detail than the above.
